Essex Power 100: Astonishing choice of names make top ten

The annual Essex Power 100 list has been announced and a number of surprise names have broken into the top ten.

Varying from a multi-millionaire businessman to a local MP, from a non-league football club owner to a reality TV star – the 2018 Essex Power 100 list has a number of questionable figures in their top ten.

The Essex Power 100 is an annual list of 100 people deemed to be the “most powerful and influential people either residing in Essex or from Essex”. The inaugural list was published on the 27th of October 2017.

A panel of people are responsible for finalising the Essex Power 100 list, taking submissions from the public and then basing the final order on the individuals past and present achievements.

So, who has made the top ten for this year’s list?

1 – Lord Sugar

Lord Sugar sits atop the Essex Power 100 List.

Alan Sugar, Lord Sugar, became a billionaire in 2015 and is well known for his BBC TV series ‘The Apprentice’. The business magnate, a former Chairman of Tottenham Hotspur for nine years, lives in Chigwell in Essex.

Having an estimated net worth of £1.8bn it is understandable as to why Lord Sugar sits atop the Essex Power 100 list. His umbrella of influence varies from aviation to IT and his popular TV series means that he has a large interest in developing companies across the county and nation.

2 – Glenn Tamplin

The placement of Glenn Tamplin at number two in the Essex Power 100 is somewhat hypocritical to the selection criteria that they base their list on. The criteria states that “the Power 100 brands aim to uphold high ethics” and that “individuals with previous convictions will be considered on a case by case basis.”

So, how has Glenn Tamplin – a man who is not shy to media attention – made the top three let alone the list in general. In September 2016, the businessman was fined £45,000 and made to pay £30,789 in court costs after Manns Waste Management Limited illegally dumped more than 6,000 tonnes of controlled waste on the grounds of his home. Just over a year later Tamplin was banned from driving for six months having been caught speeding on multiple occasions.

Meanwhile, the self-proclaimed ‘born again Christian’ has also used social media in order to advise a critic of his work at non-league side Billericay Town to commit suicide while in February 2018 Tamplin was  investigated by Essex Police after alleged “gangster threats” were made by him to Billericay footballer Elliot Kebbie.

3 – Sir Rod Stewart

When it comes to “past achievements”, Sir Stewarts certainly rank high in the music industry.

With over 100 million records sold and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame to his name, Sir Rod Stewart enters the list as a newcomer at number three. The 68-year-old rock music icon has been proclaimed as one of the best-selling musicians of all time. He was born and raised in London but resides in a Harlow mansion.

4 – Priti Patel MP

A figure who has a vast amount of influence and power in Essex stands at number four. The Rt Hon Priti Patel is the current MP for Witham, a position she has held since 2010.

The 46-year-old was Secretary of State for International Development between July 2016 and November 2017.

5 – Sir Jack Petchey

Sir Jack Petchey is a 93-year-old businessman and philanthropist known for his rewards and praises young people to believe in themselves, raise aspirations and who make a contribution to their society.

6 – Deborah Meaden

Relatively well known thanks to her role as an investor on the TV show ‘Dragons’ Den’, the 59-year-old has a net worth of £40million.

The Brightlingsea-born entrepreneur ran a multi-million pound family holiday business prior to featuring on the BBC production.

7 – Russell Brand

TV and film star Russell Brand sits seventh in the Essex Power 100 list.

Another name who has certain connotations, Russell Brand takes spot number seven in the Essex Power 100 list.

Brand achieved fame during his time as host of Big Brother’s Big Mouth show in 2004 before reaching out into film but has been no stranger to controversy. The 43-year-old has previously described the Nazis as looking “f****** fantastic” in his GQ award acceptance speech and was also arrested on suspicion of battery charges in America in 2010.

8 – Sir Charles Dunstone

A name probably unknown by many, former chairman of Carphone Warehouse Sir Charles Dunstone occupies spot number eight. With a net worth of $1.8bn, the Saffron Walden-born businessman has made his money through various telecommunications companies.

9 – Gemma Collins

The popular reality TV star shot to fame due to her role in ‘The Only Way is Essex’. The 37-year-old from Romford has spoken confidently about her battle with weight loss, leading to her own plus-sized clothing brand.

10 – Eddie Hearn

Another name which may be unfamiliar to many. Hearn, a boxing promoter and Managing Director of Matchroom Sport, is more commonly known for his promoting of fighters Anthony Joshua, Amir Khan and Tony Bellew.

The former Brentwood School student has his fighters regularly appear on Sky Sports as a result of an exclusive televised boxing deal which involves the broadcaster doing 20 live shows a year.
