Non League sides exit in FA Cup action

Two of the three Essex sides competing in the FA Cup exited the competition this afternoon.

Billericay Town were the only Essex non-league to qualify for the First Round Proper. The Blues will be drawn out in the draw on Monday evening. Moses Emmanuel scored twice for the Essex outfit but a replay is required to separate them from Taunton Town as they drew 2-2 at the AGP Arena.

Meanwhile, in South Essex, Concord Rangers were beaten 1-0 by an out-of-form Dover Athletic side who have only won once in the National League so far this season. The Beachboys delivered a strong performance against their higher-league counterparts but were unable to progress to the First Round Proper.

Braintree Town, under the interim guidance of Hakan Hayrettin, were made easy work by Barnet. Without top-scorer Mohammed Bettamer due to the 25-year-old striker being subject to transfer interest, the Iron were beaten comfortably 4-2 at The Hive.

Southend United and Colchester United enter the FA Cup at the First Round Stage, all three remaining Essex sides will discover their opponents on Monday evening.

Chris Powell had his Southend United side’s unbeaten run of five games ended as they fell victim to a 1-2 home defeat to an in-form Coventry City. Just two points separated the two sides ahead of the game but the Sky Blues departed Essex with all three points after Jodi Jones scored in second-half added time. Simon Cox was sent off midway through the second half for two yellow cards in five minutes.

Colchester United moved to within two points of the final automatic promotion spot with a 0-1 away win at Morecambe. Courtney Senior’s strike gave the U’s the victory on the stroke of half time in a battling performance.

In one of just two games taking place in the Vanarama National League South, East Thurrock scored twice in added time to leapfrog Hungerford Town in a relegation battle six-pointer. The Rocks were behind at the break but goals from Roman Michael-Percil and Steve Sheehan gave the Essex side the points after Charlie Ten-Grotenhuis was sent off in the 82nd minute with the visitors leading.

Harlow Town were beaten comfortably 7-0 by Kingstonian as they suffered a fourth defeat in six Bostik Premier League games.

Basildon United remain top of the Bostik League North Division despite a 2-1 defeat to Aveley. Third placed Bowers & Pitsea were held to a 0-0 draw by Maldon & Tiptree while Heybridge Swifts won 3-1 against Brentwood Town. Grays Athletic remained in the play-offs spots with a 2-1 win at Soham Town Rangers, meanwhile Sam Bantik rescued a point for Coggeshall Town in a 3-3 draw with Canvey Island. Sam Ashford’s late strike proved a mere consolation for Witham Town as remain in the bottom three with a 2-1 loss at Great Wakering Rovers.
